Barack Obama’s First Move as President of the United States…Nice One!

Moments ago, in his first official act since taking the oath of office, President Barack Obama issued a proclamation, calling on Americans to serve one another and our common purpose on this National Day of Renewal and Reconciliation. Check it out below, or read it on the WhiteHouse.gov proclamations page.

NATIONAL DAY OF RENEWAL AND RECONCILIATION, 2009

- – - – - – -

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

As I take the sacred oath of the highest office in the land, I am humbled by the responsibility placed upon my shoulders, renewed by the courage and decency of the American people, and fortified by my faith in an awesome God.

We are in the midst of a season of trial. Our Nation is being tested, and our people know great uncertainty. Yet the story of America is one of renewal in the face of adversity, reconciliation in a time of discord, and we know that there is a purpose for everything under heaven.

On this Inauguration Day, we are reminded that we are heirs to over two centuries of American democracy, and that this legacy is not simply a birthright — it is a glorious burden. Now it falls to us to come together as a people to carry it forward once more.

So in the words of President Abraham Lincoln, let us remember that: “The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 20, 2009, a National Day of Renewal and Reconciliation, and call upon all of our citizens to serve one another and the common purpose of remaking this Nation for our new century.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twentieth day of January, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

Low On Cash? Call Larry Flint! HAHAHAHA!

There is an increasing number of recession-pinched Los Angeles homeowners turning to Hollywood for help, offering their houses as sets for feature films, commercials and even adult movies. This is allowing them to keep their cost of living, if not their privacy.

Another upside of pimping their houses out to production companies:

Income from residential filming for fewer than 15 days a year isn’t subject to federal taxes, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

Calling All D.C. Prostitutes, Coke Dealers and Tattoo Artists!!!

PIMPS & HO’S!
A brief phone survey yesterday of D.C.-area hookers found on Craigslist revealed that Barack Obama’s inauguration is inspiring great hopes — for their business. A pair who work together expect 30 clients before Wednesday, all paying $200 a pop. Meeka, 21, a “sexy southern belle, new to town,” has come into the city specially for the festivities. “I’m busy over the weekend,” she told us. “I could make time for you, though.” Karina, 26, traveled five hours to get here, and was already “pretty booked up.”

CANDY C
Obama’s inauguration might also make history for D.C. cocaine dealers. Over five days, one 29-year-old expects to earn cash in the high five figures from out-of-towners, not least because bars are open until 5 a.m. and there are a few hundred parties. The dealer, who grew up moshing to D.C. punk, laid out $3,000 to stock up because he plans on moving “serious weight.” On Saturday, lounging in the back room of the Rock N Roll Hotel nightclub, he slipped a bag of coke into the hands of a venerable fortysomething European reporter. “I’ve had people calling me about this for weeks,” the dealer says, as the reporter hands him $60. “I just sold out. I gotta re-up.”

TATS
Check out Fatty’s Custom Tattooz and Body Piercing. The shop is celebrating what it has dubbed the “Obamathan,” where customers can get a free “Obama ’08″ logo tattoo if they buy another tattoo worth $200. The Obama tattoo, Fatty says, is worth $70.

T.J. Mohler, who works at Jinx Proof Tattoos, said business has been up as people flood the city, but only “about two or three” customers have gotten an Obama tattoo. One of those people is Mohler himself, who opted for a 5 x 7-inch Obama image on his leg. “When I look back in 50 years, it will remind me of the time and how excited everyone is,” Mohler said. None of the shop owners reported any history of George W. Bush tattoos. “No such thing,” said Jason Anthony, owner of Midtown Tattoo.

Four Stabbed at “Notorious” After-Party…Surprised?

Police say four men were stabbed at a New York City nightclub advertising an after-party for the film premiere of “Notorious” about rapper Biggie Smalls. Smalls was born Christopher Wallace and also used the stage name “Notorious B.I.G.” His debut CD, 1994′s “Ready to Die,” helped re-energize East Coast rap. He was killed in Los Angeles in 1997.

Jimmy Fallon Doing His Part to Stay Green in ’09!

“Late Night” TV is going green. When Jimmy Fallon takes over NBC’s “Late Night” show on March 2, he’ll have one of the first studios on television that is entirely eco-friendly. “Everything is recycled,” he tells The Post. “We are building everything with recycled metals and using all green lighting.

“We are starting (construction) from scratch so it is NBC’s policy that we make everything from the ground up entirely green. Everything.”

Obama – Not the Man the Right Said He Was

It just doesn’t square with the right wing narrative. They painted Barack Obama as an unpatriotic, “terrorist sympathizing” candidate whose values are foreign to the American way of life. How could it be that his ascendance to the presidency should be the occasion for the new patriotic spirit sweeping America?

Yesterday on the mall in Washington hundreds of thousands belted out “This Land is Your Land” and “America the Beautiful”. And throughout the crowd — even among the aging 60s activists who had struggled against the Vietnam War — there was a genuine, deep admiration for the men and women who risk it all every day in our armed forces.

And it’s not just in Washington. As unlikely as it might seem to the right, the election of Barack Hussein Obama has caused an intense feeling of patriotism to well up across the country. I think there are four reasons why:

First and foremost, Obama and his call to service — to commitment — has touched our most fundamental self interest — our desire for meaning. Obama understands that to have a real sense of significance, you have to have a commitment to something outside of yourself. You have to be willing to sacrifice. The right wing’s belief that if every one simply pursues their own individual interest the “invisible hand” will assure that the public interest is served doesn’t work in practice .

Patriotism is about commitment to other people – and willingness to sacrifice for the common good.

Second, Obama — his campaign and his transition have lauded traditional progressive American values: unity not division; hope and optimism not fear and cynicism; tolerance not prejudice; that it’s the right thing to help your neighbor not just yourself; that we’re all in this together — not all in this alone.

Third, the new patriotism results from relief. Americans are relieved that they once again can be proud of the way their government acts in the world.

Finally, the election of Obama makes us proud of ourselves. We are proud that we have elected the first African American president.

The celebration will not be limited to the mall in Washington, or the inaugural events that that exploded across our country. Tomorrow will be a day to be especially proud to be an American — an American citizen of a new World.

Barack Obama reminded us today in his inaugural speech that we are all coming together as citizens for a united purpose and that the sum of all our aspirations are not greater than our collective goals. Barack Obama has seized the moment, now it’s time for each of us to seize ours.
